Award-winning public library established in 1872 serving Kalamazoo area through five locations.
Kalamazoo Public Library, selected National Library of the Year in 2002, includes five locations, all either built, restored or renovated during a capital building program in the late 1990s. The striking architecture of the renovated central facility features a domed skylight that crowns an 80-foot rotunda. A holographic collar around the skylight casts rainbows throughout the building. This district library system, a resource for the southwest Michigan region, offers an extensive collection, excellent reference services, year-round programming for patrons of all ages, the Kalamazoo County Law Library, a vibrant Local History Room, innovative Nonprofit Management Support Center, free wifi, 100+ public computers, and special services for patrons with low vision. The library leads two countywide collaborations, Ready to Read, an early childhood literacy program, and Reading Together, a community reading program that involves thousands of residents each year. Support from public tax funding allows the library to offer more than a half-million catalogued items, including movies, music, computer games, audio and video books, all in the latest formats, in addition to books and other print materials, plus a comprehensive collection of online resources. The Friends of the Library sell gently used books, tapes and CDs from a bookstore on the lower level of the Central Library.
